Abstract

Although the social nature of human cognition has been examined by many disciplines of psychology, a gap is observed in the experimental and controlled analysis of social thinking and sensitivity to social stimuli. The first aim of this dissertation is testing whether a millisecond-level reaction time alteration occurs when people are exposed to social influence while they are not aware of the experiment that they attend. The second aim is to develop a measurement that allows to examine interpersonal differences in terms of social sensitivity. For this purpose two different studies have been performed. In the first study, participants, who have previously been instructed that they would attend a memory or attention experiment, were told that they would complete a demographic form before the "experiment". The first group participants (social condition) were stated that the demographic questions would be directed via a computer software by a researcher, while the second group (neutral condition) were stated that the questions would be directed automatically via a computer-based programme. Time spent by the groups of participants were compared. It has been found that the participants in the social condition had spent more time than the participants in the neutral condition. In the second study, social influence was formed by the experimenter by his/her own. The experimenter took three different position (short-distance, mid-distance, long-distance) towards three different group of participants, thus intended to create different levels of social impact on different groups. Eventually it has been examined that whether there were reaction time differences between the different social influence conditions. It has been found that there weren't any effects of different participant-experimenter distances on the answering times, nevertheless more time were spent for interpersonal-content questions compared to the personal-content questions. On the other hand in the second experiment, any difference of human face detection performance wasn't observed between the participants who were exposed to the different levels of social impact.
