Abstract

Daily samples were taken during the winter period ( November 1995 - March 1996) in Bursa for sulfur dioxide (S02) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) which refers the summation of NO and N02. Six districts were chosen in Bursa during this study. Continuous measurements were done in one of the districts called Altıparmak and concentrations in other districts were estimated based on a simple version of ATDL (atmospheric turbulent diffusion laboratory) developed by Hanna et al (1973). In the model, coefficients, calculated based on the relationship between concentration, flux and wind speed, varied between 530 and 791 for S02, and between 1630 and 1960 for NOx. It was observed that when the density of population and traffic increased, the S0 2 and NOx concentrations also increased. The measured and predicted concentrations varied between 120 and 330 ug/m3 for S02, and between 170 and 270 ug/m3 for NOx at districts where high population and traffic exist. On the overall averages, the concentrations were about 3.5 to 5 times higher in dense districts than the districts having low population and traffic. Turkish Air Quality Control Regulation (TAQCR) limit for S02 (150 ug/m3) was violated for districts having high population and traffic.
