Abstract

The Imarat (the kitchens for the poor) financed by the Waqfs were important institutions in the Ottoman social life. They were mostly established by the Sultans as well as the high rank statesmen and the rich. In these institutions, not only the poor but also the waqf personnel and the madrasah students were provided for their daily food. This article investigates five of these important imârât in Bursa.
