Abstract
Bu makalenin amacı, Sophokles’in Kral Oidipous tragedyasının ilk kez İÖ 5. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında sahnelendiği sırada nasıl algılandığını araştırmaktır. Bunun için Aristoteles’in İÖ 4. yüzyılda bu tragedya hakkındaki yargıları askıya alınıp Homeros metinlerindeki Oidipous figürü ile Sophokles’in tragedyasındaki Oidipous figürü karşılaştırılmakta ve bu karşılaştırmanın ışığında Sophokles’in Kral Oidipous tragedyasıyla İÖ 5. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında Atina’nın toplumsal ve entelektüel ortamında hangi tartışmaya katıldığı ve orada nasıl bir tutum takınmış olabileceği sorgulanmaktadır. Çalışmada varılan sonuç, Homeros’taki Oidipous anlatısının tersine, Kral Oidipous tragedyasında Sophokles’in olay örgüsünü kehanetlerin üzerine kurarak dildeki bulanıklıklardan yararlandığı ve bu yolla insan aklının ve dilinin sınırlılığını izleyicilerine temsil etmeye çalıştığıdır.
This paper investigates how Sophocles’ King Oedipus was perceived when it was first performed in the second half of the 5th century BC. To this end, we attempt at bracketing Aristotle’s views on tragedy dating from the 4th century; we compare the figure of Oedipus in Homeric texts with the figure of Oedipus in Sophocles’ tragedy; and then, in light of this comparison, we discuss what kind of debate Sophocles might be entering and what kind of criticism he might be addressing by means of his play to Athens’ social and intellectual atmosphere in the secondary half of the 5th century. The conclusion drawn in this paper is that, unlike the Homeric Oedipus, Sophocles exploits linguistic ambiguity by building the plot around the prophecies in his tragedy King Oedipus in order to illustrate the limitations of human reason and language in the eyes of his spectators.
