Abstract

In this study, it was primarily objected to establish an anatomically appropriate finite element model of the human foot and ankle. With the analysis performed the biomechanical behavior of the human foot and ankle was observed. To establish an anatomically appropriate foot model, it was required to perform the reverse engineering method and computerized tomography (CT) images from a volunteer were used. The 3D (3 Dimension) STL (Stereolithography) models of the bones and soft tissue were established by reconstruction of CT images in 3D Doctor Software and the models were processed in Geomagic Studio Software to obtain solid models in STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data) format. All models were then imported into Keycreator CAD (Computer Aided Design) Software and the assembly of the models was implemented. The cartilage tissues between bones were also created in this software. For creation of the the finite element model from geometrical model Hypermesh meshing software is used. The finite element analysis was performed in Ansys by appropriate material models and boundary conditions to acquire the stress and strain values. To evaluate the numerical results, the experimental measurements were performed by Rsscan footscan device (Pressure Plate) to obtain plantar pressure distributions and both results were compared.By experimental methods it is also possible to gather important biomechanical information of human foot and ankle. But it is very difficult to observe the internal stress and strain values by these methods. With the contribution of a comprehensive 3D the finite element model of the human foot and experimental data, these values were acquired and important information about the biomechanical behavior of the foot can be achieved.
