Abstract

Baghdad, founded in 762 by the Abbasid caliph Ebu Cafer el-Mansur, had an identity in the Islamic History and Civilization, with its services and contributions. With these features, Baghdad is one of the best examples for the definition of "Center of Civilization" This city is near the centers of ancient civilizations and in the fertile lands irrigated by the Tigris and the Euphrates, and it is one of the finest examples of Islamic urbanism with its physical structure. People from different ethnic and religious backgrounds lived together in Baghdad and this demographic structure is a good example of coexistence under the tolerance of Islam. In addition to the Muslim-Arab culture, experiences of the other civilizations had brought great wealth for all aspects of social life. The most important aspect of Baghdad in the Islamic Civilization is its contributions to the Islamic sciences and culture. With the translation activities in Baghdad, the accumulation of the ancient world was transferred into Arabic, so that the legacies of Iranian, Indian, Mesopotamian and Greek cultures were passed on to the next generations. This legacy would be transported to Europe through Andalusia and later would create the infrastructure of the Enlightenment, the Renaissance and the Reformation movements in Europe. Many important contributions to the development of the religious and positive sciences were made in Baghdad. After the translation activities, the preliminary studies related to positive sciences in the Islamic World have been done in the first centuries of the Abbasids in Baghdad. In terms of the development of religious sciences, tedvîn (codification), tasnîf (classification) and systematization of these sciences, Baghdad and the first century of Abbasids are unique. Baghdad is also the place where Mihna (Mu`tazilite inquisition) took place. This thesis deals with the physical, social, cultural, economic and scientific aspects of Baghdad in the first century of Abbasids, from its foundation in 145/762 to the 232/847.
