Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the water-yield relationships and to investigate the use of crop water stress index in irrigation scheduling in sugar beet plants irrigated with drip irrigation in sub-humid climatic conditions, in 2019. Experimental treatments were created with 4 different treatments. Of these treatments S1: Application of 100% of the water depleted at 0-90 cm soil depth for every 7 days during the development period to treatment plots, S2: The application of 2/3 of water amount given to S1 treatment, S3: The application of 1/3 of water amount given to S1 treatment and S4: The treatment that irrigation water was not applied (rainfed treatment). The experiment was carried out in 3 replications according to the randomized complete block design. In the study, the total amount of irrigation water applied according to the experimental treatments varied between 135,0 mm and 750,3 mm and the crop evapotranspiration values varied between 362,3-896,9 mm. As a result of the study, the effect of different irrigation treatments on yield, yield components and quality parameters was found to be significant at p<0.01. The average root yields that obtained varied between 2,9 tons da-1 and 8,6 tons da-1, while the highest root yield values were obtained in full irrigation treatment (S1), and the lowest root yield values were found in non-irrigated treatment (S4). Seasonal yield response factor (ky) was determined as 1,09. The seasonal average values of the crop water stress index for the treatments were determined as 0,12 for the S1 and 0,28, 0,51 and 0,85 for the S2, S3 and S4 treatments, respectively. The result of the study, it was concluded that the crop water stress index can be used in the irrigation scheduling in sugar beet cultivation. In addition, considering the water and irrigation water use efficiencies, S2 treatment has suggested in areas where water is limited and/or the cost of water is high, since it provides a water saving of 27,3% against an average loss of 1 ton root yield per decare. In this case, 0,28 can be used as the threshold CWSI value to start irrigation applications.
