Abstract

İbrahim’in ismiyle de ilişkilendirilen Ka’be kıble olarak kabul edildi.
Qibla is the direction to which Jews, Christians, Muslims and others turn in prayer. The old jewish practice in the matter of the Qibla and the importance attached to it is found in the book of Daniel (6/10). The tradition of orientation in the building of Christian churches has its origins in the cosmic orientation of Greco-Roman temples (toward the east) rather than in the geographic orientation of Jewish synagogues (toward the Temple of Jerusalem). With rare exceptions, early Christian churches were oriented on an east-west axis. The universality of the Qibla was only perfected in Islam. In the early days, before they were organised as a people, they followed as a symbol for their Qibla the sacred city of Jerusalem. When they were turned out of Makkah and arrived in Madinah, Muhammed, under divine direction, began to organise its people as an ummat, an independent people. At this stage the Ka’ba was established as Qibla, with which the name of Abraham was connected. The change took place about sixteen or seventeen months after Hijrat.
