Abstract

This article investigates on Bursa court records in terms of their number, ordering method, history, and the studies on the records. Court records are the books that record the decisions of the judges in shariah courts and cases. Bursa is regarded as very important in terms of court records because of the fact that the oldest Ottoman court records are located in Bursa archives, and with its 1062 records, Bursa archive contains the most number of records after Istanbul archives. The court records, which had been kept in the courts or under the mandate of the judges until the 19th century, were brought together for the first time in Seyh Suleyman Efendi Mektep (Shaikh Suleyman Efendi School) in 1834. The records which were sent to Istanbul in 1868, were brought back to Bursa after some time, and kept in Cendik Medresesi (Madrasa of Cendik), Evkaf Dairesi (Department for Foundations) and Ulu Cami, respectively. The records were then tranferred to Bursa Museum of Archeology in 1945 and finally sent to Milli Kutuphane (National Library) in Ankara. The studies that examined the records have been conducted in two forms as record-centered or subjectcentered.
