Abstract

An increase in the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and the resultant rise in CO2 in seawater alter the carbon chemistry of seawater. This change, known as ocean acidification, causes lower concentrations of pH and higher concentrations of bicarbonate in seawater. This new composition of the dissolved inorganic carbon pool may, by interacting with ultraviolet radiation (UVR), affect the physiology of macroalgae species. Previous researches show that increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO2, due to the resultant alteration in the carbon chemistry of seawater, affect the calcification of certain species of calcareous plankton and macroalgae. However, very little is known about how calcareous algae react towards UVR. UVR may behave synergistically, antagonistically or independently in relation to ocean acidification. For this reason, in order to determine the effects of UVR and ocean acidification on the species Corallina officinalis L., acidification experiments in CO2-enriched cultures with and without UVR exposure were conducted on the species.According to the results obtained, during the two-week implementation period, low pH increased compounds which absorbed UV, photosynthetic performance and the saturation light intensity of photosynthesis, but decreased growth rate and CaCO3 content. However, during the four-week implementation period, no significant change in photosynthetic activity was seen. It is known that UVR inhibits photosynthesis, which is carried out by photosynthetically active radiation. In this research, however, UVA (4,25Wm-2) and mid-range UVB (0,5Wm-2) increased photosynthesis and growth rates in the C. officinalis samples both independently and in conjunction with ocean acidification. On the other hand, high-level UVB inhibited growth rates both independently and in conjunction with ocean acidification, while photosynthetic performance was unaffected. Moreover, UVR caused a decrease in accessory pigment content. The results obtained from the research reveal that C. officinalis samples exposed to ocean acidification and UVB may become physiologically disadvantaged. Whilst the ecological effects of this disadvantage have not yet been determined, according to the projected future CO2 scenario, it may be considered that calcareous species will be less able to compete with non-calcareous species.
